W. Eric Chun, MD
Medical Director Biography
Dr. Eric Chun was appointed Kootenai County EMS System Medical Director in 2002. His position with the EMS System is part-time. Dr. Chun works at Northwest Specialty urgent care. He splits his time between the Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls locations.
Dr. Chun completed his undergraduate degree at University of California San Diego. He attended and graduated the University of Indiana Medical School and completed both his residency and fellowship in Emergency Medicine at Butterworth Hospital in Indiana. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
One of the most significant accomplishments during Dr. Chun’s tenure is KCEMSS’ move from a primarily Basic Life Support system to a primarily Advanced Life Support System. When he started in 2002 there were fewer than 10 paramedics system-wide. Now there are over 300 responders with 93 of them being paramedics. Additionally, he has been key in transitioning a large portion of the basic EMTs to the EMT-I and now Advanced EMT level.
Dr. Chun is actively involved in championing EMS on the local level and state level. He serves on several KCEMSS and Kootenai Health committees and is a member of the Idaho EMS Physicians Commission. He is a key part of the quality and training/education initiatives at KCEMSS. Recently Dr. Chun helped write and roll out the new High Performance CPR protocols for Kootenai County.
Dr. Chun, his wife and two sons live in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. In his free time he enjoys many of the recreational activities that his kids are involved in and spending time outside.

Gordy Luther, MD
Medical Director Biography
Dr. Luther joined Kootenai County EMS System as Co-Medical Director in January of 2015. It is a part-time position he shares with Dr. Chun. Dr. Luther works at Northwest Specialty urgent care. He splits his time between the Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls locations.
Dr. Luther completed his undergraduate degree at Occidental College, in Los Angeles, California. He attended the University of Washington School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Family Medicine Spokane, in Spokane, Washington, in 1993. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Practice, and has practiced emergency medicine his entire career.
Dr. Luther enjoys being involved in medical education, and especially enjoys direct involvement with our excellent EMS providers. He has a special interest in international medicine and has spent 2½ years of his career in El Salvador and Bolivia, much of it teaching medicine to local medical providers.
Dr. Luther, his wife Kris and 3 children feel lucky to live in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He enjoys multiple outdoor activities, including cycling, backpacking and scuba diving. He also loves attending his kids’ many athletic and other events.
