(NET) NON-EMERGENT TRANSPORTS

For all emergencies - disregard these steps and dial 9-1-1 immediately.

If you are a medical facility, nursing home, or assisted living facility and you are in need of a non emergency transport for one of your patients or residents,  these are the guidelines for you to follow to facilitate a transport:

  1. First step is to determine if an ambulance transport is medically necessary for your patient or resident.  In other words, if your patient can safely be transported by other means such as by taxi or wheel chair van, then those services should be utilized instead of calling for an ambulance.  Lack of alternate transportation does NOT create a medical necessity for ambulance service. See "Examples of Medical Necessity" link below.
  2. Second step is to fill out the "PCS Form" (Physician Certification Statement).  This form is mandatory and no patient will be transported without one.  With this form you are certifying that this patient can not be transported by any other means and you are stating the reasons for both the need for an ambulance and the need for the patient to go to another facility.  All sections of the form must be filled out completely and the form must include the signature and date from the sending physician, nurse, social worker or planner. Provide the completed original to the ambulance crew upon arrival but please keep a copy for your records.
  3. Third step it to determine the level of care that is needed from our ambulance crew during transport.  See the Facility to Facility Transport Criteria  form for guidance in determining the level of care.  This information will be needed in step 4 so dispatch can determine what type of ambulance/crew must be sent to your facility.
  4. Last step -  from within Kootenai County - call our dispatch center to schedule the transport at:  (208) 446-1854.  (Outside Kootenai County please check with your local ambulance service provider for BLS/ALS transport services.  If this is a Critical Care Transport and your county does not provide you with this service, we are happy to provide this service to you.  Critical Care Transports can be scheduled either through our dispatch office at (208) 446-1854 or through our administration office during business hours at (208) 930-4224.

If you need help with any of these steps, please contact KCEMSS administration office at (208) 930-4224 during business hours (Monday-Friday 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM) for assistance.
